Lifting Advisory on Malls in Amman

Based on current information available to the U.S. Embassy, the February 25, 2015 message to avoid high-end malls in Amman is no longer in effect.

U.S. citizens are advised that extremist groups continue to express interest in attacking malls, restaurants, and other soft targets throughout the region and in Jordan.  Last month, over 20 foreign tourists were killed in a terrorist attack at a museum in Tunis.  The U.S. Embassy urges U.S. residents and visitors to maintain a high level of vigilance when visiting public areas, and to leave the area if uncomfortable.

Jordanian security agencies continue to proactively assess the security posture at malls and other public gathering spaces.  U.S. citizens are advised to please cooperate with security procedures.  The Embassy continues to review security information and will adjust its advisories in the future as events warrant.

The Embassy advises U.S. citizens to maintain valid travel documents and enroll with the Department of State through the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program.  By enrolling, U.S. citizens make it easier for the Embassy to contact them in case of emergency.

The U.S. Embassy in Amman is located on Al-Umawiyyeen Street, Abdoun, P.O. Box 354.  The telephone number is [962] (6) 590-6000, and the fax number is [962] (6) 592-4102.  The after-hours emergency telephone number is [962] (6) 590-6500.

U.S. citizens traveling abroad regularly should monitor the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs website, where the current Worldwide CautionTravel WarningsTravel Alerts, and Country Specific Information can be found.  U.S. citizens should also review “Traveler’s Checklist,” which includes valuable security information for those both living and traveling abroad.
