Message for U.S. Citizens: Reminder about Social Security Numbers and Passports

The Consular Section at the U.S. Embassy in Amman would like to remind U.S. citizens in Jordan that all U.S. citizens must provide their social security number when applying for a passport. We cannot issue a passport, other than a limited one (approximately one week duration) without the social security number.

If you have not applied for a social security number or if you have a social security number but have forgotten the number or lost the card, you should contact the Federal Benefits Unit in Naples, Italy at FBU.Naples@ssa.gov to apply for a card.  This process can take 3-4 months and the card will be sent via regular mail.  We advise all applicants to provide a mailing address in the United States so that the card is sent there to a friend or family member rather than to Jordan.
